INSPIRATION FOR
GRAFITTI SERIES
I am a poet.
I have always been fascinated with grafitti from the street version to the sophisticated.
Much of my poetry has to do with the awakening of the heart and consciousness to the miracles that exist in simple things. "Almost Free," is a popular comment from vendors to tourists on the beaches in Mexico. Chasing Seagulls is one of my poems, now rendered in a painting.
I use excerpts from my poems in the graffiti series, often layering the words over the canvas before painting over them. When poems are the primary inspiration, I include the poem along with the canvas.
New works shown here are inspired by the sights and sounds associated with Latino music and the joyful chaos that often accompanies the exurberance and celebrations found in daily life.
CHASING SEAGULLS
If you could wander inside my mind
would you run for cover?
Or would you chase the seagulls to its edges?
Something, perhaps like poison
Seems to tamper with my vision, blurred today,
There were no boundaries
Between the worlds in which I live.
They collided with great force
and less reason.

I painted this piece as I thought about three women that I met in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico that I regard as my "gypsy sisters" and all the
fun we had together.
For me, PV was a town of chaos and joy, and within
that energy, I felt centered
and grounded.
On a gorgeous Sun Valley day, I painted outside. Children were playing
in the yard and would run
over occasionally to see my progress. As I painted, their make-believe games and laughter made their way into the painting. I began to paint in funny faces and such.
As I finished, one child ran away shouting, "Mommy, come look! --- "Donna has created a masterpiece!
FINDING HOME
No where on earth
Does there exist a place
More expansive
Than my own heart.
No where can I find
A home that is greater
Than my own body
No where in time
Does there exist a moment
Truer than this one moment
Right now.
I am fully home.

FINDING HOME
A friend challenged me to paint a self portrait.
This piece was the most difficult for me in terms of finding my way, hence the title which is taken from one of my poems. The under-layer is covered with lines from several of my poems written between 2000-2010.
After several false starts and paint overs, it was "Finding Home" that guided me to complete this piece.
The poem is written on the back in full, as well as around
the edges of the bordering
frame as shown in the image
As I finished, one child ran away shouting, "Mommy, come look! --- "Donna has created a masterpiece!
